“I do not remember that my father died, but my grandmother told me that my father died of an accident in 1999. After that I lived with my grandmother because my mother went to Dar-es-Salaam to find a job. My mother found a job in a bar, and sent money back for me and the grandmother. Once she came back and took me to the hospital when I was sick. In 2002 my mother came home from Dar and was very sick herself, she looked very different. My grandmother took care of her, but could not send her to hospital because we had no money. They went to see a witch doctor, but that didn’t help, so my mother finally died of HIV-deceases. Because my grandmother had cared for my mother, she also got ill of HIV, now she is in Mikumi hospital without any hope, she will die today or tomorrow”

John cried a lot telling this story, so I (Emma) told him that now he can come to ECCC, he was very happy and asked me to wait, he would go inside the cottage of his neighbour to get his clothes. I took him to the home, and two days later we got the message that his grandmother was dead; I took him to the funeral. Now he is well and looks like the other children, he is not crying any more.
