When her mother was a very young girl she went to work as a house girl in Morogoro. She got pregnant, but the man responsible did not accept that responsibility, and the woman she worked for sent her out when she discovered she was pregnant without a husband. She had to go back to her parents where she gave birth to the little girl. The grandparents were very poor, so they all had very little to eat. In January 2013 Witness’ mother got seriously sick, she lost a lot of blood and died in February.

The grandparents have tried to take care of the little girl, they do some farming, but most days they have nothing else than ugali with salt to eat, there is no nourishment in that. Witness asked if she could start school soon, but that was not possible for the grandparents, they could not afford to buy clothes. But now, after coming to ECCC, she is very happy and the thanks a lot. She girl was called Gloria, but was baptised Witness, so that is the name Emma will use for the school papers, and she can use her grandfather’s name as a surname. According to Emma she is very shy and quiet.
